Poland’s government came to power in December 2023 on a pledge to end the country’s near-total abortion ban. But one year after taking office, that promise remained unfulfilled, leaving many women disillusioned and doubtful of politicians’ commitment to changing the law.

To find out what the first year has been like for Ukrainian refugees in Poland, I went back to talk to some of the Ukrainians I had previously interviewed after their arrival in Poland.

As COVID-related deaths in Poland surpassed 800 a day in April 2021 and the country hit a European record for excess deaths, epidemiologists have pointed to a major medical personnel shortage as one of the culprits.

By night, the 40-foot-tall cross on the Catholic church in central Poland offers a neon light show of blue, red or purple. By day, the cross produces the electricity to power the church’s lighting, heating and air conditioning.

In April 2020, in the midst of a coronavirus lockdown in Poland, Katarzyna found out that the baby she was carrying had a severe genetic disorder. Terminations of such pregnancies were soon to be banned in predominantly Catholic Poland.

Surrounded by fields of roses and lavender in tranquil eastern Poland, some residents of the village of Konskowola feel the European Union may be trying to blackmail them.
